Snippets of Poetic Joy – These verses are only a snippet of the whole poems from whence they come. If you like what you read seek out the rest! (Don’t you love my attempts at lyrical language.=)
Out in the lonely woods the jasmine burns
Its fragrant lamps, & turns
Into a royal court with green festoons
The banks of dark lagoons.
In the deep heart of every forest tree
The blood is all aglee,
And there’s a look about the leafless bowers
As if they dreamed of flowers.
-Henry Timrod, Spring
Spring rides no horses down the hill,
But comes on foot, a goose-girl still
And all the loveliest things there be
Come simply so, it seems to me.
-Edna St. Vincent Millay, The Goose-Girl
And lo, the Lord of the Garden,
He makes His sun to rise,
And His rain to fall like pardon
On our dusty paradise.
On us He has laid the duty-
The task of the wandering breed-
To better the world with beauty,
Wherever the way may lead.
Who shall inquire of the season,
Or question the wind where it blows?
We blossom & ask no reason,
The Lord of the Garden knows.

Hey Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI totally didn't think about it not being spring everywhere! Sorry about that - & happy autumn (which is actually my favorite season - though right now I'm really loving spring, too). =)
Hope you & your family stuff are on the mend! =)
